A 60-meter drilled well reaching below the contaminated aquifer layer, fitted with a solar-powered pump so it doesn't depend on the village's unreliable electricity grid
A multi-stage filtration and UV disinfection system housed in a small block building at the village center, capable of serving roughly 340 residents
Six distribution points positioned so that no household is more than a five-minute walk from clean water
A trained maintenance committee of four village residents who monitor filter cartridges and pump performance, with a direct line to Uplift's regional technical staff
That last piece matters as much as the engineering. Too many well-intentioned water projects fail within a few years because no one nearby knows how to fix them. Uplift's approach treats training as a deliverable, not an afterthought — the maintenance committee completed a two-week certification program before the system went live, and it's now considered part of the project's actual completion criteria.
What Changed, in Residents' Own Words
The clearest measure of impact isn't a statistic — it's what people describe when asked what's different now. Joan, who runs the village's only small grocery, put it simply: "I used to close for two hours every afternoon because I needed to fetch water for my family. Now I keep the shop open. The school reports a 31% drop in absences tied to water-related illness since the system opened, and morning attendance — specifically the first class of the day, previously the hardest hit — has stabilized. Can Tomàs wasn't selected because it was the most severe case Uplift has seen — it was selected because it was representative of a pattern repeating across dozens of small rural communities near larger cities in the region, places overlooked by municipal expansion plans because their populations are too small to prioritize. Three more villages in the same watershed are currently in Uplift's assessment pipeline for next year, each facing a version of the same story: contaminated shallow wells, long walks, and mornings organized around water instead of school or work.
