Why a Sunrise Gathering
There's a reason Uplift's signature annual fundraiser starts before the sun comes up rather than at a conventional evening gala hour. "We wanted an event that felt like the work itself — quiet, a little uncomfortable to get out of bed for, and worth it once you're there," says event lead Carla Mendoza, who has organized Spreading Hope: Charity Sunrise Gathering since its first, much smaller version four years ago. This year's gathering returns to the hills just outside Barcelona for what organizers expect to be its largest turnout yet.
If you've never been, or you're deciding whether this is the year you finally go, here's a concrete look at what the morning actually holds.
The Schedule, Hour by Hour
5:45 AM — Gates open. Coffee, tea, and a light breakfast are available immediately; early arrival is worth it for a good spot on the hillside before the crowd fills in
6:20 AM — Opening remarks from Uplift's program directors, with a short update on the past year's clean water, education, and nutrition milestones
6:35 AM — Sunrise, timed as closely as the calendar allows to coincide with the event's central moment: a moment of collective silence before the morning's speakers begin
6:45 AM — Guest speakers, including at least one community member whose life has been directly changed by an Uplift program — past years have featured a parent from the education initiative and a village council member from a clean water project
7:15 AM — Community breakfast and the year's fundraising pledge drive, where attendees can commit to a donation on the spot or scan a code to give later
8:00 AM — Informal networking and program booths, where each of Uplift's three focus areas has a table with staff on hand to answer questions
The whole event typically wraps by 9:00 AM, deliberately short enough that people can attend before a full workday rather than needing to carve out an evening.
Who's Speaking This Year
This year's lineup includes two returning voices and one new one. Marta, the mother from Can Tomàs whose village received a new well and filtration system last year, will speak about what changed for her family in the twelve months since. A representative from the nutrition program's community kitchen will talk through what a typical morning looks like feeding 200 children — the same behind-the-scenes detail regular readers of Uplift's blog have seen covered separately. And for the first time, a local business owner who organized a corporate volunteer day with Uplift last year will speak from the donor and volunteer side of the partnership, not just the program side.
What to Bring and What to Expect
Because the event starts in low light and often cool morning air, even in a Barcelona summer, a few practical notes:
Dress in layers — hillside mornings run cooler than you'd expect, and it warms up fast once the sun is fully up
Wear shoes suited to grass and uneven ground; the venue is an open hillside, not a paved lot
Bring a reusable water bottle — refill stations are available, but disposable cups are intentionally limited to cut down on event waste
Arrive by 6:15 AM if you want a seated spot before opening remarks; standing room is available throughout for later arrivals
Registration is free, though attendees are encouraged to make a donation or set up a personal fundraising page ahead of the event — many past attendees have used the gathering as the deadline that finally gets their fundraising page moving.
Why Attendance Matters Beyond the Morning Itself
The Sunrise Gathering isn't Uplift's largest single fundraising event by dollar total — a handful of corporate sponsorship drives raise more on paper. What it does uniquely well is turn supporters who've only ever seen Uplift's work through an email newsletter or a social post into people who've stood next to a program participant and heard, in their own words, what a specific donation built. Event organizers consistently report that first-time attendees are far more likely to become recurring monthly donors within the following year compared to supporters who've only given online.
